A Taste of Childhood Luxury: The Irresistible Magic of See's Candies Lollypops.

It has been ages since I last had a See's Candies lollypop—so long that I had almost forgotten them. Yet, the moment I saw that familiar wrapping, a flood of memories came rushing back. While it’s much easier to find See's Candies in Taiwan now with their own physical stores, things were entirely different back then.

Years ago, you simply couldn’t buy See's Candies in Taiwan. The only way to get your hands on them was if someone brought them back from abroad—specifically from the United States, the brand’s birthplace. Other countries just wouldn't do.

At that time, traveling to America was a monumental feat. Unlike today, those who flew to the U.S. were usually there for business, study, or immigration. A flight to the Americas was an exhausting and expensive endeavor that most average families simply couldn't afford, which is why everyone dreamed of catching a glimpse of the "American Dream."

Consequently, if someone in your family brought back a souvenir from the States, it was a point of immense pride—something you could truly brag about at school. Holding a single lollypop made you the envy of everyone. Since they were quite pricey, sharing was out of the question; you had to savor every lick. I still remember taking a few licks, wrapping it back up to save for later, only to find a trail of ants swarming it later on. That’s how I learned they either had to go in the fridge or be finished right away!

Although it's easy to buy them now, I’ve reached an age where I rarely crave lollipops. They are delicious but undeniably sweet. Still, having just one isn't a problem—if only for the sake of nostalgia.
