A Trip to Hualien Tourist Sugar Factory | Enjoy Delicious Ice Cream

Hualien Tourist Sugar Factory is also one of Hualien's famous attractions. Its main feature is the ice cream and popsicles you can enjoy here. In the past, it was an important sugar factory in eastern Taiwan, but it later transformed into a tourist factory. This transformation has attracted many visitors, primarily for the ice cream. To say it's special might be an overstatement, but it's a nice stop if you're passing by. For us, it wasn't a destination worth a special trip, but since our route happened to pass by, we included it as a little afternoon snack stop.

As for whether there's anything else worth seeing in the park, I honestly don't know. We just had some ice cream, took a quick glance at the Japanese-style wooden houses, and left. We didn't stay long. When we visited over ten years ago, there wasn't any accommodation (Japanese-style wooden houses), but this time we found out they now offer lodging. The accommodations seem quite unique, preserving the old Japanese-style dormitories and converting them into guest rooms. If you want to experience Japanese-style accommodation, you might want to give it a try. However, the area is quite inconvenient, with nothing much to do at night. You'll need to bring your own snacks and essentials.

We ordered three kinds of ice cream: Moonlight Ice (vanilla ice cream with egg yolk, peanut slices, and raisins), wasabi ice cream, and taro peanut ice cream. Out of curiosity, we decided to try the one with egg yolk. At first, we were a bit apprehensive when we got it, worried it might upset our stomachs. However, it didn't taste weird or have a fishy smell at all. It was pretty much like eating plain vanilla ice cream. The wasabi flavor was quite interesting and really had that wasabi feel to it.

Although the accommodation is quite unique, the place seems rather humid. Additionally, there aren't many attractions nearby. What could attract tourists to stay here? Aside from the Japanese tatami-style rooms, there's not much else. The surrounding area looked quite open and empty on our way back, and it would probably be very quiet at night.
