Walking Along the Bustling Rua do Cunha in Macau: The Bitter Sweet Coffee Experience
As you stroll through the lively Rua do Cunha in Macau, the air is filled with the enticing aromas of local delicacies—beef offal, pastries, egg tarts, and specialty gifts. Suddenly, the rich scent of coffee drifts by, piquing your curiosity and awakening a craving for caffeine. This area is home to numerous coffee shops, including several well-established and frequently recommended spots.
These popular cafés are often featured for good reasons: they won’t break the bank, and their flavors are generally pleasing to most palates. Choosing any of them is likely a better deal than the one we’re about to discuss. Of course, it might just be that we’re too thrifty or unable to appreciate the true value of premium coffee. Perhaps the fault lies with us and not the coffee itself.
Bitter Sweet 必達士 Coffee & Dessert is an exceptionally unique café that caught our attention as we passed by. After a long day of walking without a cup of coffee, we felt the need to recharge. The cakes on display were also tempting. Drawn by some mysterious force, we decided to step inside. Two of our companions eagerly entered ahead of me, already scanning the menu and debating which coffee to order.
The interior had a cozy and charming vibe, complemented by the inviting scents of coffee and desserts. It seemed like the perfect place to indulge. But as I looked over the menu, my eyes caught the small print on the offset conditions and, more importantly, the prices listed next to each item. With some skepticism, I asked my companions, “Did you check the prices?” Their answer: “Not yet.” I suggested they take a closer look before committing to an order. Stepping outside, I waited for their decision. Moments later, they quietly exited as well, saying, “Maybe we’re not that thirsty after all.”
Honestly, the prices were quite steep, and the portions seemed small. We didn’t get to taste the coffee, so I can’t comment on the flavor. However, one thing to note is that this type of coffee might not appeal to younger generations. While Blue Mountain coffee had its heyday, many young people today haven’t even tried it and might not find it to their liking.
The café’s cakes, on the other hand, have garnered mixed reviews—some praise them, while others are less impressed. Perhaps this café wasn’t meant for us, but it might just be the perfect spot for someone else!
