What’s So Special About an Ice Cream?
Many influencers visiting Hong Kong make it a point to find and take pictures with it. For a period, any tourist traveling to Hong Kong seemed to follow suit. But is this just a trend, or is it really that delicious? Or perhaps there’s another reason behind its popularity? Could it simply be because the Mobile Softee truck is hard to come across, and spotting it depends entirely on luck? For Hong Kong locals, this ice cream is probably more of a childhood memory, but now it has become a must-visit photo spot for tourists.
Before heading to Hong Kong, my younger brother and his girlfriend did some research and came across posts about Mobile Softee. However, they had a very casual attitude about it—not determined to find it at all costs. If they saw it, great; if not, no big deal. After all, it’s just an ice cream, something they could live without. Besides, they’re not the type to go out of their way for Instagram-worthy posts.
Ironically, this laid-back attitude led them to unexpectedly stumble upon the Mobile Softee truck! After finishing breakfast at Kam Wah Café in Mong Kok, they casually strolled toward Tung Choi Street (also known as Sneaker Street), aimlessly exploring the area—only to suddenly spot the ice cream truck! This twist of fate was quite surprising. I’ve heard of people traveling all the way to Hong Kong and failing to find the truck, yet we weren’t even looking for it and managed to see it?
Since they found it, they decided to give it a try. The price was around HK$13 per cone, though I can’t recall the exact amount. Size-wise, it wasn’t particularly cheap, especially compared to Taiwan’s FamilyMart soft serve, which is larger. Naturally, the first thing everyone did after getting their ice cream was to take photos—raising it high like the Statue of Liberty’s torch for that perfect shot. Only after securing the proof did they finally take a bite! The ice cream had a strong, rich milk flavor, but toward the end, it started feeling a bit heavy. Thankfully, the portion wasn’t too big.
Later that day, after leaving Mong Kok, they headed to West Kowloon Station to buy high-speed rail tickets for the next day. Surprisingly, they spotted another Mobile Softee truck right next to the Xiqu Centre! Does this truck move around alone, or are there multiple ones roaming the city? Either way, spotting it twice in one day—completely unplanned—felt like quite a lucky coincidence!
