On the way to the Bai Juyi Cruise Pier, you’ll find plenty of restaurants around, including some well-known spots with long queues—just head for the one with the biggest crowd. Along the road, you’ll also see lots of tourists renting traditional clothes for photos, something that’s pretty common across most Suzhou attractions. After a while, it doesn’t feel surprising anymore—though honestly, I had a lot of thoughts about it that I couldn’t really say out loud, haha.
Taking the cruise itself really depends on the person—it’s not necessarily for everyone. From one perspective, it can feel like a pretty boring activity. Sure, there’s a guide narrating historical stories and pointing out famous landmarks along the way. But since the boat doesn’t move very fast, how much you actually take in—or remember—really depends on you. Personally, I didn’t remember a single thing! I was simply there to enjoy the night view.
This here is the official ticket office, though hardly anyone actually buys tickets from it or even stops to ask. That’s because there are plenty of ticket booths nearby selling the exact same cruise tickets. The funny part is, those roadside booths sell way more tickets than the official office. People just buy them as they pass by—no one bothers walking all the way here. So ironically, the staff at the official counter seem the most idle.
Ticket prices vary depending on the time. Before 6 p.m. and after 6 p.m., there’s a difference of about 20 RMB. So choosing a trip just before 6 p.m. worked out nicely—you save some money and still get to see the night view.
Once you see this building, you know the pier is just ahead.
The cruise includes a short Pingtan performance, about 10 minutes long. They performed some well-known tunes, but honestly, I don’t really understand the art of Pingtan. Not that it matters though—based on what I observed, most tourists didn’t understand either. Especially those sitting further back—no one was really paying attention, they were all chatting or just looking outside.
