People should listen to advice, not push themselves too hard, and be honest about their own abilities. Because we took the advice, we first stopped by the Guanyinshan Visitor Center to consult the staff, which helped us abandon the idea of tackling Yinghan Ridge on our very first visit. Instead, we started with an easier, more leisurely trail—the Niugangling Trail.
Although the sign says it takes about 20 minutes to reach the top, that really depends on your fitness level. There is a section of the trail with a fairly steep slope, and part of it even feels a bit exposed. Walking at a relaxed pace, it actually took us around 30 to 40 minutes to reach the final observation platform.
There weren’t many visitors, so the whole walk felt calm and unhurried. Taking it slow and enjoying the scenery was quite pleasant, and you can even see the coastline in the direction of Taipei Port from above. For people who hike regularly, this trail is probably no big deal. But for those who aren’t used to uphill and downhill walking, your legs will definitely start to shake.
In the end, we were really glad we listened to the advice and didn’t go for Yinghan Ridge. Even if we might have managed to climb up, I seriously doubt we could have made it back down comfortably. And the recommended times posted on the signs are honestly not something most people can achieve—let alone someone like me who’s far from athletic. Having been to Guanyinshan once, I think it’s perfectly fine to forget about Yinghan Ridge altogether.
