Whenever I pass by Songjiang Self-Serve Stone Hot Pot near Xingtian Temple, I’m always greeted by an endless queue. If you’ve ever been in this neighborhood, chances are you know exactly which place I’m talking about. It’s one of Taipei’s most iconic stone hot pot institutions, standing alongside a handful of other legendary old-school spots.
I actually ate here a long, long, long time ago—so far back that my memory of it has almost completely faded. I had this hazy impression of having visited before, but every time I passed by recently, it was either outside of meal times or I already had other dining plans. I kept missing my chance to return.
This time, however, I happened to arrive at the perfect moment. There was no crowd, no line, and I was able to walk straight in. The interior decor and table setups really capture that nostalgic vibe; it reminded me so much of how restaurants used to look back in the day.
The highlight—and honestly, what everyone comes for—is the tableside stir-frying to start the meal. A staff member comes to your table to sauté the aromatic base ingredients right in the stone pot. Once the fragrance is locked in, they pour in the broth to complete the soup base. From there, the rest is up to you—just grab whatever ingredients you like from the fridges.
A quick tip: I’d recommend keeping a little distance during the stir-frying process so the sizzle and oil splatter don't get all over your clothes!
