Located in the alley right next to Taipei Xiehe High School of Industry and Commerce, Zheng Gu Ma Chicken Chop Bento Shop has been serving the local community for a long time. Rumor has it that they might be the original creator of Taiwanese fried chicken chops. Whether that rumor holds true or not doesn’t really matter—for anyone who simply cares about great food, fantastic taste is all that counts. During mealtimes, the shop gets incredibly busy, with a massive volume of takeout and delivery orders. You will constantly see customers grabbing their bento boxes to go, alongside huge bags filled with boxed meals being packed up for delivery.
If it’s your first time visiting, you must try their signature Fried Chicken Chop Rice first. Just be prepared to exercise a little patience—partly because the chicken chops are freshly fried to order, and partly because so many people order them. While the side dishes are standard bento staples, the main attraction is undoubtedly the chicken chop itself. When your meal arrives, you’ll notice the chicken chop is so huge that it completely covers the bed of rice, leaving no white rice visible underneath.
The chicken chop is impressively thick, juicy, and never dry. The frying technique here is top-notch, achieving the perfect golden crisp. Bony parts make up very little of the piece, so you get mostly solid, tender meat without having to pick through a lot of bones. It’s definitely a spot well worth treating yourself to every now and then!
