Must-Try: Kam Wah Cafe's Famous Pineapple Bun

No matter how many days you spend in Hong Kong, how many meals you have, or what you eat, you should always save some room for a pineapple bun with butter. Oh, and of course, don’t forget about the egg tart! At Kam Wah Café in Mong Kok, you can satisfy both cravings in one go—you get to enjoy both a pineapple bun and an egg tart.

In the past, there were many great places for pineapple buns and egg tarts, but unfortunately, I forgot the names and locations of the ones I had tried. Back then, I never thought to record them! I even once went on a mini food tour, eating multiple pineapple buns and egg tarts in a day, but now I can’t eat that much anymore.

The café has two sections—one for dine-in and one for takeout.

Their milk tea is quite good! A cup in the morning is totally reasonable—the balance of milk and tea flavors is just right.

This combination is a simple yet classic one that every cha chaan teng offers. How could it not be delicious?

There are quite a few topping choices, and you can pick from macaroni, instant noodles, or rice noodles. The portion size is quite generous—more than expected. Some cha chaan tengs these days serve much smaller portions! The stir-fried shredded pork with pickled mustard greens was flavorful and well-seasoned.

I highly recommend getting a pineapple bun with butter. It’s actually not that big, and you can also opt for takeout. The butter inside is generously portioned—too small a piece would be disappointing. Plus, it’s meant to be cold and unmelted. If the bun is too hot, the butter melts too quickly, changing the experience. Unless you eat it immediately, the flavor is different once the butter melts.

At first, my younger brother hesitated about trying it since the set meal was already quite filling. I told him he should at least give it a try—and he ended up eating half of it! He even considered ordering another one, haha. But after finishing it, the guilt kicked in—this thing is a calorie bomb! Gotta walk a lot to burn it off.

Of course, everyone has their own preferences—taste is subjective!
