Once a beloved breakfast cart hidden in the alleys of Taipei’s East District, Shang Shun Xing’s chewy and fragrant rice balls made a comeback after the owner and his wife came out of retirement. Back in the day, I always seemed to visit when they were closed. When news broke about their retirement, many loyal fans expressed their sadness online. Long lines formed during the final days, with people lamenting the loss of one more classic breakfast spot in the East District.
No one really expected them to reopen — and certainly not in the same location. Instead of returning to the East District, they quietly opened a storefront in a rather low-traffic area. It’s a bit off the beaten path, right by a busy main road with limited parking. I can’t help but wonder if it's on the first floor of their own home — it would definitely make things less tiring and time-consuming than running a street cart like before.
Whether you're male or female, I seriously recommend knowing your limits before ordering — don’t get too excited and overdo it, or you’ll be full for the entire day. Especially for those with sensitive stomachs, be cautious with the sticky rice — it’s not easy to digest and can leave you feeling overwhelmed. A lighter option is their secret menu scallion pancake with fillings (the same toppings used in the rice balls, just without the sticky rice), or simply go for a regular rice ball. The combo version — scallion pancake with rice ball fillings — is truly massive. You might not be able to finish it in one sitting, and you could probably skip your next few meals.
As for the taste, it’s exactly what you’d expect — comforting and classic. Personally, I found the sticky rice a bit firmer than I prefer, but the scallion pancake was wonderfully fragrant. The owners are friendly and welcoming, even during busy hours, which is probably a big reason why so many people keep coming back. And the portion size? Definitely generous. It’ll leave you full — possibly more than you planned.
