Airline Food: Is It Really That Bad? A Non-Picky Eater's Take

Airplane meals are probably a love-hate thing for many travelers, especially for those on long-haul flights, where the quality of the food can really affect your mood. For short flights, there’s usually only one meal—so even if it’s not great, you can always eat something beforehand or wait until you land. It’s manageable. But for long flights, you might have to eat two or even three meals onboard, plus snacks. If the food isn’t good and you’re hungry, it can definitely make the journey less pleasant.

That said, airplane meal options have improved a lot over the years. There are now vegetarian meals, religious meal options, and more. Without those, some travelers would really struggle to find anything they can eat. Sometimes, even people with dietary restrictions or those trying to eat healthier will opt for special meals.

Personally, I don’t have too many issues with airplane food. Occasionally the rice might be too mushy, but overall, the flavors are okay—it’s still edible. After all, food tastes different at high altitudes. The main goal is to fill your stomach. Being overly picky doesn't serve much purpose, especially if it puts you in a bad mood—after all, you can't exactly walk away from it. I also really dislike wasting food, so I usually try to finish everything. If you really think you won’t like it, then just don’t take it—there’s no need to waste food.

Honestly, it’s rarely so bad that you can’t eat it at all. Is there really any need to be that dramatic? Think about people who don’t even have food choices—or enough food to eat. We’re actually pretty lucky. If the food is good, you take it for granted. If it’s not, just keep a good attitude. Nothing in life is ever perfect, and that’s okay.
