There was a period when I stayed away from Shi Family’s sesame kidney soup. Even if I happened to be nearby, I wouldn’t feel like eating there—I’d usually go for other snacks first. During meal times, the line tends to be long since each bowl of soup is freshly made by just one person. There are separate lines for dine-in and takeout, and most people opt for takeout because the dine-in area is small, narrow, and not exactly cool or cozy.
But lately, I’ve occasionally felt like going back for a bowl. The variety of side dishes is limited, so it’s pretty tough if you want to eat vegetables. Still, a bowl of braised pork rice with liver soup hits the spot. As for the sesame oil soup, I usually only have it when the weather is cold or when I feel my body can handle the extra heat—otherwise, I rarely go for it. Tofu isn’t a must-order either; it’s more of a way to get in some extra protein. Honestly, tofu here is just okay.
The liver soup has a generous amount of liver, not the kind where you get a few slices and then you’re left with just broth.
The braised pork rice is that classic old-school flavor. Is it particularly special? Not really. It’s just a simple, no-frills braised pork rice. Add a bit of pepper and the flavor shifts slightly. The rice this time was just right—not too mushy, which paired nicely with the meat.
Looking at it now still makes me crave it. But I need to keep my distance from these tasty, high-calorie dishes. I’m afraid I won’t be able to control myself!
