National Library, Psalms Cafe, or 7-11?

First-time experiences are unique—like stepping into the National Library for the very first time, or dining at the café nestled underneath it. Some experiences are memorable, others forgettable, and a few might dissuade a return. Being new to the National Library area and pressed for time during lunch, I found myself unable to explore other options.

I walked into the only café inside the National Library, called Psalms Cafe. At first glance at the menu, I almost left, considering a quick meal at the nearby 7-11 instead. The prices seemed unusually high—was it to align with the library's ambiance? Was it a matter of maintaining a certain standard? However, I ended up staying; some in the group didn't fancy 7-11, and time was of the essence, after all. (Regrettably so, as subsequent events proved !)

The environment was brightly lit, but there were flies buzzing around, which was quite disappointing. Additionally, the service was almost nonexistent. You had to place your order and pay at the counter, and then they would bring the food to your table. There was a minimum spending requirement and a time limit for dining.

The menu boasted awards for their beef noodles, but the actual taste was subjective. At least, in my circle, some found it quite ordinary. It didn't seem worth the price and portion size. All that was left was a large-looking empty bowl!

This Dongpo Pork set meal was priced at NT$360, a sight that prompted an immediate shake of the head. Generally, the dishes here start at NT$290, with desserts being the only chance to find something below NT$200. At this price point, one could enjoy a satisfying meal with ample portions at other restaurants. Is it their belief that this level of pricing reflects sophistication? The side dishes being served cold were somewhat acceptable, but the main course was just lukewarm. After finishing the meal, the lingering feeling was of wondering where the money went, still feeling hungry. Ha! Let's chalk it up to an experience. Better off heading to the nearby 7-11; at least you can eat until you're sick there.
