It's been several years since I last had Wei Jie's stuffed tapioca balls, even before the pandemic hit a few years ago. Their location in the Luodong Night Market has changed since then, too. They used to be tucked away in an alley, but now they've moved out. There's one place with seating indoors and another where it's just for takeout with no seating available.
The number of customers seems to have dwindled compared to before. It used to be packed, with long queues forming, but now there's hardly any need to wait.
The utensils and decor have all been updated, looking quite different from before. Personally, I feel like the new setup looks a bit empty, and I'm not a big fan of the utensils. Despite the visual changes, the portion size hasn't increased. Plus, it's not as convenient to eat, and the cleanliness isn't up to par. The dishes and utensils handed to me were still damp.
You want it to be warm, not hot, and cool, not cold. It's awkward when something that should be warm ends up cooling down, right?
This is just so-so!
Personally, I felt that Wei Jie's stuffed tapioca balls weren't as tasty as they used to be, and there was a noticeable difference in texture. Other items like tofu pudding and sweet soup were just average. They didn't quite meet the standards set by the past experiences, so this time, I felt a bit disappointed. Especially when I went with my family, initially mentioning its reputation, but everyone ended up feeling it was rather ordinary. Even my brother, who had it before, remarked that it wasn't as good as he remembered. Of course, this is purely based on our taste preferences, and others might feel differently. However, the likelihood of us wanting to try it again on our next visit to Yilan isn't too high. I'd suggest trying it out for yourself before deciding!
