Yuli Bridgehead Stinky Tofu in Hualien | Worth the Wait! Long Lines Form Even Before Opening

The most famous stinky tofu in eastern Taiwan, besides the Yuli Bridgehead Stinky Tofu, is probably the various branches of Yuli Bridgehead Stinky Tofu in different locations. When it was only available at the Yuli Bridgehead store, the location was quite remote, almost reaching Taitung. Although many people wanted to try it, the distance was enough to deter them unless they were traveling towards Taitung or from Taitung to Hualien. Otherwise, they could only long for the stinky tofu without the chance to taste it.

But now, the number of its branches is increasing. The Hualien store, for instance, is in the most convenient location in Hualien, close to the city center, with plenty of public parking nearby, making parking not an issue. The area around the store is relatively spacious with ample seating, but it still gets crowded, and you might have to wait for those ahead of you. So, it's not surprising to see people standing and eating with their stinky tofu in hand.

Before the official opening, you can get a number ticket if you arrive early, and then wait for your number to be called to order. At first, we didn't know we needed to take a number ticket, so we missed out on getting an earlier number while we were just observing from the side. Everyone quickly finds a place to sit and waits for their number to be called and their food to be served.

Even before the official opening, the entrance is already filled with waiting customers. Not to mention those standing and waiting, and the continuous stream of arriving customers.

Its side dishes include ingredients rarely seen in Taipei, aside from the common Taiwanese kimchi, such as pickled radish strips and basil. This unexpected combination works surprisingly well for a refreshing and palate-cleansing effect, although their stinky tofu itself is not heavy. There's no greasy feeling or excessive oil taste from frying; their frying technique is highly skilled, using different oil temperatures for the first and second fryings. The stinky tofu is crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and beautifully colored. It's understandable why so many people come here to eat or make a special trip.
