Shantang Street: A Complete Guide to Suzhou's Most Beautiful Ancient Street

Shantang Street in Suzhou was the first “unknown” spot I visited on this trip. Although I’ve been to Suzhou several times before, I had never heard of or been to this place. That in itself was quite interesting—I wasn’t sure if it just wasn’t as lively back then, or if it had since been renovated and promoted more. At the time, none of my friends had ever mentioned or recommended it to me either. Later, when I was planning this trip, I read some introductions and noticed that quite a few people recommended Shantang Street, so I decided to add it to my itinerary.

Cars are not allowed inside Shantang Street, so after taking a Didi ride, I got dropped off at the entrance on the outer road and then walked in. After passing through the archway, you still need to go a bit further before reaching the actual area of Shantang Street. In fact, the walkable section of the street isn’t very long. Hardly anyone actually walks all the way to Tiger Hill—these days, Shantang Street is basically a commercial street.

This bridge is the most photographed check-in spot. You could say that once you’ve taken a photo there, it counts as having “been” to Shantang Street. Even a security guard I encountered earlier told me, “Just go to the bridge, take a photo, and that’s about it.” As for whether it’s worth visiting, if you’ve never been here before, it’s worth coming to see for yourself. What’s guaranteed is that there will be a lot of people—especially as it gets closer to evening, when the crowds grow even larger. As for snacks, there aren’t really any that stand out as must-tries. After comparing what’s shown in promotional materials with your own experience, you’ll come away with your own thoughts and conclusions—and those will naturally differ from person to person!
