Taipei Food Guide: Chou's Tofu Roll — The Must-Try Spot for Clean, Refreshing Taiwanese Flavors

If I lived near Zhou’s Tofu Rolls, I’d probably eat them a few times every week. But living in that area is way out of my budget! So I can only make a special trip once in a while when the craving hits. It’s one of those treats that I only get to enjoy occasionally.

Zhou’s Tofu Rolls aren’t anything fancy—there’s nothing particularly special about them, nor do they involve any complicated seasonings or ingredients. People who like them will really like them; people who don’t definitely won’t. Most young people might not appreciate this kind of flavor, because it’s basically very mild—mostly the original taste of the ingredients with just a hint of seasoning.

But it’s exactly this simple and unpretentious flavor that makes it so easy to eat for breakfast—light, not greasy, and pan-grilled instead of deep-fried. You can taste the fragrance of the dough and the natural flavors of the filling. Of course, you can add your own sauces if you want. But sometimes, I actually prefer the original taste—no additives, no complex flavors. It may seem boring at first bite, but the more you eat it, the more you appreciate it.
