Pork liver soup is a deceptively simple yet challenging dish to master, as it's easy to accidentally overcook the pork liver. This is why Kekou's pork liver soup, which has been in business for over 50 years, is truly special. According to a friend, the restaurant had to close for a while during the pandemic, but it reopened after the situation improved. It's located in a lane behind the Ding Hao shopping district on Da'an Road. This area is highly competitive, with plenty of small eateries nearby. However, it's not an area I frequent often. The lanes in this neighborhood are not typically on my radar, which is how I ended up missing out on Kekou's delicious pork liver soup!
In addition to pork liver soup and sesame noodles, there are also options for blanched greens and a selection of side dishes. I remember that the pork liver soup place behind Ren'ai Hospital doesn't offer these choices. However, when I took a look, it seemed that ordering side dishes is relatively rare; the majority of customers opt for the combination of pork liver soup and sesame noodles. Between 3 to 4 pm, even before dinner time, the place is already quite busy. Almost every table is occupied, and the restaurant's interior is not very spacious, so seating is limited. Fortunately, dining times are not excessively long, and you don't have to wait for an extended period to get a table. It's also possible that you might end up sharing a table with strangers.
Self-serve Napa cabbage kimchi is almost a standard accompaniment to pork liver soup. Some people use it to complement sesame noodles, offering a change of flavor to refresh the palate. Others use it as a side for their pork liver soup, so you can enjoy it however you like.
It's marinated quite intensely, with a rather strong and salty spiciness, so you need to be cautious when eating it. It's not quite to my taste!
The portion of the pork liver soup is quite generous, and the pork liver is cooked just right, tender and not dry. The broth is made using a stock as the base, giving it a familiar taste. The seasoning is relatively mild! Do you think it's better to use a clear broth or a stock to cook pork liver soup?
I borrowed my friend's sesame noodles for a photo, as I wasn't very hungry that day, and opted for the pork liver soup. In truth, I was quite torn when I saw my friend eating it, and I kept debating whether to order a bowl for myself. The main reason was that I wanted to mix in the spicy kimchi and savor it! If you're not sure what to eat when you're in the area, it's worth considering.
