The Iconic Ruins of St. Paul's: A Macau Highlight

When you think of Macau, the first landmark that likely comes to mind is the Ruins of St. Paul's. Despite knowing this spot will be crowded with tourists, visiting Macau without seeing the Ruins of St. Paul's feels like you haven’t truly been to Macau. That’s how iconic it is! Its reputation precedes itself as one of Macau's must-visit attractions, with its presence dominating social media posts related to the city. It's almost as if you can’t claim you’ve been to Macau unless you’ve checked this place off your list.

This was probably my second time seeing the Ruins of St. Paul, and it had been N years since my last visit—so long ago that I don’t even dare to remember exactly when. Back then, it was already crowded, and now the number of visitors has only increased. The influx of Chinese mainland tour groups completely occupies every possible angle, infiltrating every photo frame. Finding a moment or angle without people is next to impossible. I’ve simply given up trying; I’m not that obsessed with getting a people-free shot of the Ruins.

The steps leading up to the ruins are also a popular photo spot, with guides often pointing out the best step for capturing the perfect angle. Nearby is Mount Fortress, which is worth a visit as well. Walking down the steps, you’ll find pedestrian streets leading to other attractions like Love Lane, Senado Square, and the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau.

For a different vibe, you might choose to visit in the evening. The Ruins of St. Paul look stunning at night, illuminated by spotlights that create a whole new atmosphere!
