As one of the most prominent buildings in the Senado Square area, the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau Building is also a well-known tourist attraction. Is it an interesting spot for visitors? That’s debatable. Personally, having visited Macau twice, I’ve been to this place both times. But if you ask whether there’s something particularly fascinating inside, it’s quite subjective. Some might find it boring, and honestly, you can explore it in under 10 minutes.
However, I genuinely appreciate its architectural style. Is it worth a visit? I think so, though some people might not be interested in such sites. I’m not very familiar with its history or origins, but I purely enjoy the aesthetics of this building and admire how well it’s been preserved.
Introduction
According to Administrative Regulation No. 31/2018, the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau Building is categorized as the "Municipal Affairs Bureau Building (formerly the site of the Old Senate)."
The Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau Building (now the Municipal Affairs Bureau Building) was formerly the Old Senate, constructed in 1784. It underwent several renovations over the years, with its current structure formed during the 1874 reconstruction, showcasing a distinct Southern European architectural style.
On the second floor, the Senado Library, established in 1929, was inspired by the library at Portugal’s Mafra National Palace (Biblioteca do Convento de Mafra). Its decor and furnishings exude a strong classical ambiance. The library specializes in foreign-language books from the 17th century to the 1950s, focusing on historical documents related to Portugal’s presence in Africa and the Far East, including many rare items.
