Traveling between Macau and Hong Kong is quite convenient, with options like ferries and cross-border buses. You can even hire a private car if needed. Many travelers plan a 1-2 day trip to Macau while visiting Hong Kong, or vice versa, depending on their main destination. Airfare between the two locations is similar in price, and flights are frequent. However, for those not interested in casinos, Macau might seem less appealing at first glance.
This article focuses on cross-border buses. There are two ways to take them: one is to use free shuttle buses or taxis to the border and buy tickets there, which offers more flexibility since cross-border buses operate 24/7. The other option is direct cross-border buses, which have fixed schedules and require prior planning. An example of the latter is the Hong Kong-Macau One route.
This route connects Jordan in Hong Kong with three major hotels in Macau (Sands Cotai Central, The Venetian, and The Londoner). It's essential to check the locations of your hotels and the stops on the route to ensure convenience. Otherwise, you might consider other direct cross-border buses or traveling to the border directly to catch a bus.
The Hong Kong-Macau One route was a perfect fit for our needs. We stayed at The Londoner Macao (formerly the Sheraton Hotel), and our Hong Kong accommodation was in Jordan. The route aligned perfectly, saving us the hassle of transfers or long walks. After alighting at Jordan Road, it was only about a 10-minute walk to our hotel!
Confirming Fares and Travel Tips for Hong Kong-Macau One Bus
It’s best to double-check the fare before traveling, as prices may have changed since the fare table from May 2024. You can pay in either Macau Patacas (MOP) or Hong Kong Dollars (HKD), with HKD being the more commonly used currency.
The green buses of the Hong Kong-Macau One service are easy to spot. While the seats aren’t particularly spacious, they are reasonably comfortable, and the service is popular among travelers. However, if you’re carrying large luggage, it might be inconvenient. You’ll need to handle your own luggage during customs clearance, which involves moving it on and off the bus. If you don’t have expedited customs clearance, this can be time-consuming and stressful.
A key policy of Hong Kong-Macau One is that it only waits for passengers at the customs area for 20 minutes. If you take longer, the bus will leave without you. Many Hong Kong and Macau residents use fast-track e-channels for customs, allowing them to clear quickly. However, most foreign travelers need to go through the standard customs counters, which can be unpredictable in terms of timing.
We were particularly nervous during customs, fearing we’d miss the bus. Fortunately, we made it in time, but we witnessed other foreign travelers miss the bus after taking too long at the second customs checkpoint in Hong Kong. Although they managed to clear Macau customs in time, delays at Hong Kong customs meant they couldn’t reboard.
