A Bowl of Comfort on the Journey: Delicious Tasty Congee Shrimp Wonton Noodles at Hong Kong Airport

Eating at the Airport Is Rarely a Smart Choice, but…

Eating at the airport is usually not a wise decision because the prices are always higher than those outside—this is true for airports in any country. When there's no choice but to eat at the airport, the best option is often a fast-food chain, but not every airport has one.

My decision to eat shrimp wonton noodles at Tasty Congee Noodle Wantun Shop (正斗) in Hong Kong Airport wasn’t because I was hungry—I simply wanted a bowl of wonton noodles. In fact, I had already had a pricey meal at Shake Shack before coming to the airport, so I wasn’t really hungry at all. Skipping a meal here wouldn’t have been an issue, especially since another meal awaited me on the plane.

The Unique Texture of Hong Kong Noodles

The texture of noodles in Hong Kong is different from those in Taiwan or mainland China, and some people might not enjoy it. Many find lo mein (撈麵) particularly hard to get used to. However, wontons are generally well-accepted and liked. That said, dedicated wonton noodle shops seem to be less common than before.

A Small Bowl That Leaves You Wanting More

This was a small bowl of shrimp wonton noodles, priced at HKD 72—definitely not enough to fill up an adult male, which is why many people order additional dishes. It looks very simple and unadorned—no vegetables, just noodles, wontons, and a tiny bit of yellow chives that are barely noticeable.

The noodles are thin and chewy, maintaining a slightly dry texture even in the soup. The shrimp filling in the wontons is fresh and sweet, with a delicate, thin wrapper. As for the number of wontons—let’s not even count. The broth may look ordinary, but it tastes far from it—smooth, savory, and rich in umami. It definitely satisfied my craving for a bowl of wonton noodles, though having it in the city would have been the better option. That said, some places in the city nowadays aren’t as great as they used to be either.

One thing’s for sure—many people complain about portion sizes and prices. If you have the same thoughts, rest assured, you’re not alone.
