Preliminary Reminder:
For travelers transferring from West Kowloon Station (High-Speed Rail) to Airport Express Kowloon Station, it is highly recommended not to bring too much luggage. Otherwise, you’ll find the journey quite exhausting and end up complaining about how inconvenient it is.
The transfer route between the High-Speed Rail and the Airport Express is not a straight path. You will need to carry your luggage up and down several times, making use of escalators and elevators—though whether you’ll encounter stairs is uncertain.
Follow the Signs Carefully
One crucial thing to keep in mind is to pay close attention to the signage. If you follow the signs, you most likely won’t get lost, though some of the designs may leave you puzzled. Just think logically, and you’ll find your way.
The journey takes at least 20–30 minutes, and it’s nearly impossible to complete it in just a dozen minutes. It’s even farther than walking from Taipei Main Station to the Taoyuan Airport MRT Station. Before I made the trip, someone told me it would only take a few minutes and that it was easy to find—but as I walked, I felt like cursing.
Route Overview
- Take the escalator to another building.
- Enter a shopping mall-like area where you will see directional signs—follow them.
- One for the MTR (subway)
- One for the Airport Express
🚶 Walking through this area takes around 10 minutes—assuming you walk fast.
- I took an elevator, and after exiting, I saw Kowloon Station. From here, you need to go downstairs.
- To the left is the MTR entrance, and to the right is a self-service ticketing area.
- The path between them leads to the Airport Express—head in that direction!
- Take another elevator down, and you will finally see the Airport Express.
Final Thoughts
There weren’t many travelers along the way, and I seemed to be the only one dragging two suitcases. However, if you’re transferring from West Kowloon Station to the Airport Express, you have no choice but to walk—hailing a taxi isn’t really an option.
Also, don’t expect to easily find someone to ask for directions, so pay close attention to the signs. When planning your schedule, allow extra time for the transfer and don’t cut it too close.
If you’re traveling from Dongguan South to Hong Kong Airport, taking the High-Speed Rail and transferring to the Airport Express is significantly faster than taking a bus—you can save nearly two hours!
