I haven't been to Hong Kong Airport for years—not since the pandemic. I did visit Hong Kong last year, though, and I noticed quite a few changes in the airport’s dining area. While the overall infrastructure and environment remain the same, the restaurant brands and the number of food outlets have increased significantly. Now, many Gates have their own dining options. In the past, you could only get a proper meal at the food court on the departures level, but now there are plenty of choices even near the Gates.
The biggest advantage of this change is better time management. Before, if you wanted to eat, you had to factor in the distance to your Gate—sometimes, it was just easier to skip the meal altogether. That said, not every trip requires a meal at the airport, unless you have a long layover. The food court on the departures level has been completely revamped, with mostly unfamiliar restaurants. Not only have the brands changed, but the prices are also quite different now. On the bright side, there are more international cuisine options available.
Many travelers struggle with choosing what to eat here. The biggest concerns? Price and portion size. To be honest, portions have never been generous here, and when combined with the high prices, it becomes quite an interesting dilemma. Personally, whenever I need a quick bite at the airport, my go-to options have always been McDonald's or Popeyes. And McDonald's is hands down the safest choice—I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve eaten McDonald's at Hong Kong Airport.
But guess what? McDonald's is gone. Sigh.
And that’s not even the worst part. The real disappointment? I only realized after heading to my Gate that there were other decent-looking restaurants there. What a facepalm moment!
So, if you ask me what to eat at Hong Kong Airport? My advice—eat before you get here! Haha!
