Revisiting Ximen Noodle Shop: The Unchanging Delicious Pork Knuckle Rice and Its Unique Service

I happened to accompany my family to a hospital near Ximending, and after we were done, it was lunchtime, so we decided to eat at a noodle shop in Ximending. The biggest issue here is that there are too few seats inside, and we happened to hit the lunch rush with many nearby office workers coming to eat. The place was completely packed with customers. That would’ve been fine, but even though there weren’t many takeout orders, some dine-in customers waited over 30 minutes without getting their food. In the end, we couldn’t take it anymore and left—otherwise lunch break would’ve been over. That was the most ridiculous thing we experienced that day.

The staff responded in their usual impatient tone, just saying, "You still have to wait, I’ll check on it for you." It was one of those replies that basically meant nothing—there wasn’t any noticeable improvement in speed. You also have to be okay with sharing a table. A lot can happen here. One strange thing was when a foreign customer was handed an English menu, but the staff kept speaking to them in Chinese. I mean, isn’t it obvious they’re not local? A puzzling move!

The queue for takeout and dine-in are in different spots!

The lemon aiyu jelly drink is quite good!

As for the side dishes—braised tofu, Daxi dried tofu, vegetarian rolls—they were all decent. The dried tofu with tiny anchovies was flavorful too. The noodles were average. The braised pork knuckle rice looked dark in color but wasn’t overly greasy or heavy in taste. However, the portion seemed even smaller than before. Not just the amount of pork knuckle, but even the rice felt reduced. The bowl itself felt more prominent than the food inside. Don’t expect good value for money here. I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat there—only if I happen to be nearby and have no idea what else to eat.
