No matter when we visited Grandma’s Home in the past, or which branch we went to, it was always packed with long lines. I didn’t expect that not only would there be no line this time, but the restaurant wasn’t even full—even though this branch is right by West Lake (near Hubin Pedestrian Street). It used to be much easier to find, but after the renovation it moved down to B1, and it’s not that easy to locate if you haven’t been here before. You might even get lost. We actually wandered around in a circle before we found it!
If it’s your first time in Hangzhou and you’re not sure what to eat, Grandma’s Home is definitely an option. Or, like me, when I have no idea where to go, I’ll just choose this place. It’s a reliable and safe choice with low risk of disappointment. Before it expanded to this large scale, I used to come here often, and the prices were always affordable. When dining with a group and splitting the bill, it’s especially cost-effective—often cheaper than eating alone.
There were only two of us this time, and since we were having a late lunch, we didn’t order much. We chose dishes quite casually—basically just whatever looked good. So we didn’t really order the classic Hangzhou dishes, nor did we fully go for their signature items. The only signature dish we ordered was the Grandma’s Red-Braised Pork. In the past, we would also order the Tea-Smoked Chicken or Longjing Shrimp. Their dishes are all very flavorful and perfect with rice. Since we didn’t order any rice this time, eating everything on its own was a bit intense and easy to feel greasy. But that’s on us, not the restaurant—we just couldn’t finish more food and wanted to keep it simple.
We ordered purely based on what we felt like eating, and the dishes came out extremely fast—everything arrived within 10 minutes after we placed our order. The flavors were still good overall. It’s just that missing bowl of white rice that made the meal feel a little incomplete.
