Not every century-old establishment is worth trying. Being around for a hundred years doesn’t necessarily mean it suits your taste. But if you’re truly interested, of course you can still give it a try. Wang Runxing Restaurant on Hefang Street in Hangzhou is also one of those long-established, traditional eateries. During the period I lived in Hangzhou, I visited Hefang Street dozens of times, but I only ate there once—and that was because a friend came to visit. When we arrived at Hefang Street, it happened to be around dinner time, so we chose to go in. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have made it onto my list at all. I’m not sure why, but it simply never appealed to me.
Judging from its exterior, Wang Runxing Restaurant has a certain charm and atmosphere. The prices felt slightly on the high side, but as for the taste… it just wasn’t for me. My only impression from that visit was: I didn’t really know what I had eaten, and then we left. We even went to get some food elsewhere afterward. It might have just been that it didn’t suit our tastes but could be enjoyable for others. Still, I’ve rarely heard anyone recommend it.
I’ve never heard locals in Hangzhou mention it, but its location on Hefang Street is quite good and very noticeable. On the other hand, there are simply too many dining options in Hangzhou now. Hangzhou cuisine chains are everywhere, and their prices are much more reasonable. This greatly reduces the reasons to dine here. Honestly, it’s enough to just look at it from the outside!
