Kaifan Sichuan Bistro is a chain restaurant with branches in many department stores. We didn’t make a special trip to the Xiao Bitan location in Xindian; we simply picked it because we were meeting friends nearby. Personally, I feel that when you have no idea what to eat, choosing this type of restaurant is usually a safe bet. Their SOP and standardized procedures are well-established, which means the dishes are consistently prepared, and the flavors are generally reliable. You could say the food is solid and steady—not particularly surprising or extraordinary. But sometimes, that’s exactly what makes it the best choice!
The vinegar drink is refillable, so no need to worry about not having enough. In fact, they’re more afraid that you won’t drink enough!
The pickled radish with soy sauce and vinegar is my favorite—slightly spicy and very appetizing.
Some friends dining with us can’t really handle spicy food, so we changed the adjustable dishes to non-spicy versions when possible. Personally, I think it’s a bit of a pity. Sometimes, that hint of spice really elevates a dish—it’s a little trick that transforms the flavor. But even without the spice, the dishes still tasted good, and everything maintained a certain quality. The portions were also reasonably sized, allowing us to order more dishes to try!
Usually I don’t feel like eating rice, but coming here makes it hard to refuse. It would be such a waste not to enjoy these dishes with rice.
