Miaoli's Culinary Gem: Why Fule Noodle Shop's Hakka Delights Draw Weekend Crowds

Fule Noodle Shop in Gongguan, Miaoli has been a long-standing local eatery, operating for several decades. Even today, there still aren’t many nearby restaurants that can compete with it—mainly because the area itself is not very bustling. However, it’s said that the shop has changed owners, so it’s no longer run by the original team. The interior has also been renovated and looks quite different from before.

I pass by the shop several times every year, but aside from eating there more often in the early days, in recent years I usually just drive past without stopping. I never really feel the urge to eat there, especially when I see the long line of people waiting outside—it instantly kills the thought. They don’t take reservations, so everyone has to line up on-site. The turnover rate is decent, though; dishes come out fast and people also finish quickly. In the past, the menu was much simpler with just noodles and small side dishes, unlike the many options available now.

Their Hakka-style fried rice noodles have a unique flavor that you won’t find elsewhere, something I crave once in a while.

We arrived later in the day, so many dishes were already sold out, and the selection of side dishes was also limited. We just ordered a few items. Some of the classic Hakka dishes still tasted fine, but compared to the old days, they weren’t as flavorful—everything used to taste better. The bamboo shoots, which should become more fragrant and flavorful the longer they cook, were just average that day. The fried rice noodles were acceptable, but the rest were mediocre.

As for other dishes I used to enjoy, I didn’t order them this time, so I can’t comment. But relatives and friends who live in the area don’t really come anymore—between the long lines, the prices, and the decline in flavor, it’s just not what it used to be!
