Kavalan is a well-known whisky producer in Taiwan, established in 2005 and located in Dongshan Township, Yilan County. They are renowned for producing high-quality single malt whiskies and have won numerous awards in international whisky competitions. Kavalan offers a variety of different styles of whisky, including single malt, single cask, blended malt, blended whisky, and base whisky.
In recent years, Kavalan has become a popular Taiwanese whisky brand, with an increasing number of people choosing to try their products. Interestingly, my parents, who are not particularly interested in alcohol and discourage us from drinking, have become interested in Kavalan whisky. My father attended an EMBA program and participated in many class gatherings where they mainly drank Kavalan whisky, particularly the Kavalan Solist series, which typically costs around NT$1000 per bottle.
As a result, my parents went to the Kavalan distillery to purchase one or two bottles of whisky to bring on a family trip. However, they ended up buying three bottles of different flavors and types of whisky. It's either the salesperson was too good or they are just really good at drinking.
There are two whiskies in the Kavalan Selection series, No.1 and No.2. One has a fruity aroma while the other has an herbal floral aroma, and they have different mouthfeel as well. Each one has its own fans!
Kavalan Solist Sherry Cask Single Malt Whisky is a premium whiskey matured in handcrafted Spanish sherry casks, which have been carefully selected to enhance the flavor of the whiskey. The whiskey has a delicate and rich aroma, with hints of sweet fruit, dry fruit, and nuts, and a smooth and elegant mouthfeel. It is the perfect combination of craftsmanship and aging techniques, resulting in a complex, well-balanced and aromatic whiskey.
Kavalan Solist Port Cask Single Malt Whisky is a classic and unique single malt whisky with a distinct personality and a harmonious overall taste. It is Kavalan's first attempt at barrel aging, and the combination of outstanding flavors from Portuguese port wine barrels with the unique characteristics of the Kavalan distillery in Taiwan produces a rich and layered aroma and flavor.
The Sherry Cask and Port Cask versions are slightly more advanced and slightly more expensive than the Solist Select series, with different colors, flavors, and tastes. However, it is recommended not to start with the Sherry Cask or Port Cask versions, as the difference in taste compared to the Solist Select series is significant. You may not want to buy the Solist Select after trying these two. However, the Solist Select is not inferior; it is an unfair comparison.
Taiwanese whisky is not necessarily inferior to foreign whisky, which is why they have won awards. In fact, for me, I don't have exceptional tasting skills. The enjoyment of drinking depends on different situations and moods, and different whiskies should be chosen accordingly. Good or bad is a subjective thought; it's about finding the whisky that you enjoy through trial and error.
