Revisiting Food | The Smartfish | What's it like to be second to last in line

Lin Congming's Hot Pot Fish Head continues to attract countless people who line up for it. This time, my family and I decided to visit Chiayi and thought it would be a great opportunity to try it with my father. After all, he's the only one in our family who hasn't had it yet; the rest of us have already been there at least once. It's definitely one of the most desired dishes in Chiayi, besides turkey rice.

The only mistake we made was arriving at the restaurant too late due to the delay in calling a taxi. When we got to the restaurant's entrance, we hurriedly grabbed a number card, but after taking a few steps, we heard that all the number cards had already been given out. The people behind us would have to come back tomorrow.

Thankfully, we managed to get a number card; otherwise, we would have missed out on the opportunity to eat. Even so, we still had to wait for over an hour before settling the bill and waiting to be seated. It was during this time, while chatting with the customers behind us in line, that we realized they were the last ones, and we were second to last. We shared a mutual feeling of helplessness and awkwardly laughed about it. Hahaha! The lucky thing was that we could still have a meal, although many of the ingredients were already sold out.

The most important thing was whether the Hot Pot Fish Head was sold out or not because otherwise, waiting in line would have been in vain. Whether we could order other dishes or not wasn't a big concern, as we wouldn't be too disappointed if we didn't get to try them.

They didn't even have half-cooked eggs available, which is a shame because putting a half-cooked egg on top of the rice would have made it even more delicious. As for the braised pork rice, it was just average. We ordered the chicken rice (the lighter version) because we were worried that we wouldn't have time to try it at another restaurant. Otherwise, plain rice would have been sufficient. The best part is when you pour the hot pot fish head soup over the white rice—it's truly satisfying. As for the braised pork rice and chicken rice, they can both go stand in the corner.

The taste is still the same as last time. It's perfect as a side dish to enjoy with a drink. I almost wanted to open the newly bought whiskey and have a glass with it.

By the time we arrived at the restaurant, they were already in the process of cleaning, and there were only a few tables left with customers. Despite this, they were still accommodating when I asked for extra soup, as they had set aside some additional portions. However, it felt strange to see the empty streets and the staff cleaning up as soon as we finished our meal. The unfamiliar atmosphere was a bit unsettling, and there was also a sense of danger. The floor was covered in soapy water, making it slippery to walk on. We had to be particularly careful when leaving. Personally, I think they could have kept a pathway untouched until all the customers had left before starting the cleaning process.
