Accommodation at Smangus always includes breakfast, but guests are responsible for their own lunches and dinners, which can be either self-prepared or enjoyed at the Canaan Food House within the tribe. However, it is advisable to make advance reservations for meals at the Canaan Food House, as only a limited selection of dishes is available without prior booking. This approach makes perfect sense in the mountainous region, allowing better control over meal quantities and reducing food wastage. Unless you don't mind having fewer choices or have time constraints, you can simply order the dishes that do not require reservations.
All these meals come with refills of soup and extra rice, so there's no need to worry about going hungry. Honestly, the set meals alone are quite filling, and I've never needed any extra portions. For instance, during our three-day, two-night stay, we managed to enjoy all the available dishes at least once, especially with four people sharing. We even ordered the reserved dishes twice, not minding the repetition. It's essential to send your advanced meal orders to the customer service team one day before heading to Smangus!
The restaurant is entirely constructed from wood, with an open space underneath. Thankfully, there's no direct view below, as it might make your legs feel weak. The height is quite substantial, so it's advisable to wear extra layers in the evening, as it can get cold. The daytime scenery here is stunning, offering a view of the distant mountains. When you arrive at the restaurant, simply inform the service desk of your room number and name, and they will assign you a seat. They will then deliver your meal to your table, and our meal expenses will be settled together with our accommodation fees, so there's no need for any additional payments!
The breakfast includes small side dishes served with white rice porridge, along with basic beverages like coffee and black tea. Breakfast is relatively simple but should satisfy your hunger. They also offer bread and toast. The breakfast service ends quite early, so please come early. There's no chance for you to hit the snooze button!
In fact, the most significant variation in their meals is the main course of the set menu; the other side dishes remain mostly the same. Even when there are changes in the side dishes, they are not too extensive. The only drawback might be that the portion of vegetables is not very generous. However, the main course portion is surprisingly generous. Additionally, their family-style dishes have restrictions on the number of people and are primarily suitable for group visitors. Nevertheless, if you happen to pass by and see their meals, they do look quite appealing because they are Thai-style dishes.
