Truth be told, I've had my fair share of sun cakes over the years and have developed a liking for them. But if you were to ask me which bakery makes the most famous or tastiest sun cakes, I honestly wouldn't know. Recently, a relative visited and brought a box of sun cakes with a label from 'San Mei Zhen Nagasaki Cake Specialty Shop.' Honestly, I can't quite see the connection to sun cakes on the label! Ha!
Maybe Taichung is just naturally understated, with the shop officially selling Nagasaki cakes but actually excelling in sun cakes. Or perhaps they started selling sun cakes later on and weren't originally from Taichung. It's really hard to grasp the history of these renowned shops. Just in my research, I found out that they no longer sell Nagasaki cakes but haven't changed the shop's name. Apparently, they used to sell fantastic Nagasaki cakes, and some feel it's a shame they stopped. Quite a puzzling story.
It tasted like a typical sun cake, crispy on the outside with a mildly sweet filling. However, I couldn't pinpoint anything notably different or special compared to other sun cakes. As for when I might consider buying it again after trying it, that's uncertain. After all, whether something is tasty or not often depends on individual preferences and other factors like nostalgia.
For outsiders, it's challenging to establish any emotional connection, so it ultimately comes down to taste. Oddly enough, I'm a bit more intrigued by the Nagasaki cakes they don't sell anymore!
