Hakka cuisine restaurants hold great appeal for Hakka people, at least for my family. Almost every time we see a Hakka restaurant, we feel the urge to try it out. Nowadays, it's rare for us to cook Hakka dishes at home, as we mostly only get to enjoy classic homemade Hakka dishes when we go back to our hometown for the Lunar New Year. In Taipei, Hakka restaurants aren't particularly numerous, so whenever we spot one, we seize the chance to savor some Hakka flavors.
San Zhu Yuan Hakka Restaurant has an environment that's more suitable for group meals, making it a great place for large gatherings. You can either order individual dishes or opt for set menus, with a wide range of price options. That's why many nearby companies choose to dine here for lunch, or to treat themselves to something different. We arrived fairly early that day, but by lunchtime, nearly all the large tables were filled with office workers from the surrounding area.
Ordering individual dishes tends to be slower than set meals since the pre-ordered dishes are prepared in advance, meaning we ended up waiting longer than those who ordered the set meals.
The drunken chicken had a strong alcohol flavor, just the way we like it. Haha! The chicken was tender and soft as well.
Hakka stir-fry is a must-try, but unfortunately, it didn't quite match the flavor of the Hakka stir-fry we make at home. Some of the ingredients seemed undercooked.
The bamboo shoot stew fell short in both cooking time and broth quality, making the flavor rather mediocre.
The portion of sweet and sour pork ribs was too small, with way more bones than meat. This is one of my pet peeves about sweet and sour ribs, and the dish was also too sweet!
For my family, the taste of the dishes at this Hakka restaurant didn't quite suit us. My family even said they probably wouldn't come back or recommend it to friends for gatherings. Of course, this is just personal preference, as there were still plenty of customers dining there. It shows that many people find it quite good, or at least a suitable option for group meals. As for portion sizes, they weren't particularly large—we had four people and didn't feel completely full, though we weren't inclined to order any more dishes.
