Most tourists likely start from Senado Square and walk northward to the Ruins of St. Paul’s. Along the way, they’ll pass through a commercial street that, despite having different names along the route, feels like one continuous path leading directly to the Ruins of St. Paul’s—unless you take a detour. Thanks to this street, you almost can’t get lost. Simply follow the crowds, and you’ll find your way. The further you walk, the more people you’ll see; it’s never the other way around.

This time, however, we took the opposite approach. We took a taxi directly to the slope next to the Ruins of St. Paul’s and walked downhill from there. The entire street is lined with pharmacies, beauty stores, snack shops, and souvenir stores—many of them well-known brands. The sheer number of repetitive stores is astonishing. How much do people enjoy shopping at pharmacies? And how many tourists buy souvenirs here? The scale is truly overwhelming. This area is undoubtedly bustling, and nearby alleys also feature international brands, but honestly, I wasn’t too interested in shopping. Instead, I found the buildings themselves more captivating.

Whether or not to buy souvenirs here is up to you. You might also want to pick up some over-the-counter medications or daily essentials. However, it’s a good idea to do some research beforehand, as many beauty products sold here can also be found in Hong Kong.
