Taipa Houses Museum: A Letdown or a Hidden Gem?

The Taipa Houses Museum is one of Macau's Eight Scenic Spots, and its biggest highlight is undoubtedly the style of the five restored Portuguese-style buildings. Especially with their distinctive colors—doesn’t that shade remind you of Tiffany blue? It feels oddly familiar, though you’d need a color swatch to confirm for sure.

When I visited, only the Creative Casa was open. Inside, it was filled with cultural and creative products, essentially a souvenir shop. Unfortunately, the rest of the houses were closed, likely due to bad timing. Even when they’re open, not all five buildings are accessible; two of them are still under maintenance. The exterior designs of the houses don’t differ much, so you won’t need much time to explore. If not for stepping inside to browse the products, I might have left within five minutes. Don’t be surprised—it really is that dull. The site’s main draw is its Portuguese architecture.

In front of the Taipa Houses Museum is the Taipa Wetland Ecological Zone, which features walkways for visitors to explore and appreciate the area. Just ahead are casinos, and at night, you might catch a view of the city lights, though there are better spots for night views. This place is likely to feel deserted in the evening. Visitor numbers are relatively low, which is understandable. It’s more suitable for travelers seeking a slightly deeper exploration. Otherwise, it’s not a spot worth spending much time on!
