Have you ever noticed that while scrolling through Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, or other social media platforms, so many posts and short videos feature colorful walls paired with station names as the background? All of these come from the Hong Kong MTR stations, which seem to have become a trendy must-visit spot for photo ops. When traveling to Hong Kong, it feels almost obligatory to snap a photo or video there.
The most popular stations for this trend are typically near major attractions. On the Kowloon side, they include Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei, Jordan, and Tsim Sha Tsui. On Hong Kong Island, stations like Central, Wan Chai, Sheung Wan, and Prince Edward are fan favorites. Essentially, these stations are all close to key tourist spots.
As someone who has visited Hong Kong more than 10 times, I honestly never considered taking photos at MTR stations. It always seemed like such an ordinary thing. But after seeing so many people jumping on this bandwagon, I started questioning whether I was falling behind on the trends. Last year, when I traveled with my younger brother and his girlfriend, she took videos at every station we stopped at to edit and upload later.
Personally, I don’t have strong feelings about it—just don’t make me take the pictures. The main reason is that taking photos at busy stations, especially the more crowded ones, feels uncomfortable with so many people passing by. From a design perspective, though, I can appreciate the vibrant colors and diversity compared to the Taipei Metro. Beyond that? I’m still searching for a reason to convince myself to join in!
