The MixC Mega-Morphic: Hangzhou's CBD Transformation in 10 Shocking Years

The Hangzhou MixC today looks completely different from how it used to be. In the past, it stood alone—a solitary department store in an undeveloped area. When it was first built, the surroundings were rather desolate; at night, it was so dark that walking around could actually feel scary. Yet, even back then, plans were already in place to develop this district into a new central area, mainly focused on the financial industry. The MixC was the first major development to move in and complete construction, but at the time, many people were skeptical, wondering what use it would be when the nearby area still needed years to develop.

As it turns out, it ended up securing the best location in the district. Now it’s difficult for any new mall to compete with it. It has even expanded beyond its original building, with much more space than before. What I remember most vividly is the ice rink inside—it used to be the only one in all of Hangzhou. I’m not sure if there are others now.

This time, I came here to meet a friend who works in the financial sector nearby. We had lunch together and took a look around this long-unvisited area. The changes are truly remarkable. There are now many more restaurants—back then, only the MixC itself had dining options. Now you can find numerous domestic and international restaurant chains and many high-end brands. The area has become much livelier than before! It all feels a bit unfamiliar now. I used to be able to drive anywhere in Hangzhou without needing navigation, but these days, I’d be completely lost without it.
