There aren’t many cafes in Gongguan, Miaoli; the options are quite limited. Even the restaurant choices are down to just a handful. Every time I go back to visit, deciding where to eat becomes a real headache because going to the same old places gets boring. Not to mention, cafes or Western restaurants are practically rare species here. It's not that they never existed before, but very few managed to survive. However, people are much more open-minded now, and even many of the elders are willing to give them a try.
MODA & the MOON is not just a cafe but also a B&B. It's tucked away in the mountains, so you'll need to drive or ride a scooter to get there. Its location is actually quite interesting—there are no other buildings around, just this one standing alone. The cafe requires reservations and has a minimum spend policy as well as dining time limits. You might think people would be put off by so many restrictions, but it’s actually quite popular. We visited on a weekday, and the place was almost packed. I guess it really shows how few places there are to hang out in Gongguan, Miaoli!
They’ve infused some Hakka culinary elements into their menu, like baked rice and pizzas made with salted pork and dried mustard greens (Meigan cai), which is pretty interesting. The combination isn't awkward or weird at all; it’s just a bit heavy on the flavor. The drinks also have their own unique characteristics and are definitely worth a try. The fried snacks, however, are quite ordinary, so I wouldn’t recommend them. Also, keep in mind that it's self-service here—you have to grab your own water and utensils.
