A Taste of Nostalgia: Exploring the Classic Menu at Lu Guang Restaurant

Lu Guang Restaurant is indeed recognized as one of Taipei’s classic military village cuisine spots. This style of cooking holds a distinct, irresistible appeal for older generations—partly because these original flavors are becoming increasingly rare. It might not seem extraordinary at first glance, but it carries a simple, comforting quality that evokes fond memories. You could describe it as the taste of a specific era! It is the kind of comfort food my family misses if we haven't had it in a while, prompting us to revisit every now and then.

However, during our recent visit, the menu selection was noticeably less extensive than it used to be (though I am uncertain if this has improved since). The staff mentioned that staffing shortages made it difficult to keep up, forcing them to discontinue many of their labor-intensive stir-fried dishes.

As with most military village eateries, noodles and dumplings remain the staple main dishes. Their execution is reliable, making it a great spot for noodle lovers. The braised dishes (lu wei) are another undeniable highlight—virtually every customer orders a plate, as it is a defining feature of the restaurant.

In the past, visiting with a larger group was ideal so everyone could share a wider variety of dishes. Nowadays, dining alone or in a pair is completely manageable, and it is much more common to see solo diners or small parties enjoying a simple, relaxed meal.
